Legend has it that in 1637, King Charles I, owed his tailor a lot of money and being unable to pay, seeded land from the Duchy of Lancaster to settle his account. The plot of land became known as the Duchy Rag.
Duchy Rag House is a family home and as such incorporates those things we consider important like good showers, comfortable beds and areas to relax – in fact the things we look for when we are travelling.
We are always around if you need us. If you want something, just ask – ironing board and iron, more coffee and even a selection of emergency toiletries like tooth brushes and paste if you have forgotten them.
We want your stay to be a relaxed one. This is an alternative, soul filled place where you can expect a warm welcome and a bit of home from home. See what our guests say…
Hosts Richard and Karen were both extremely knowledgable. friendly, helpful and very hospitable. The house is very comfortable, interesting and attractive. Our bedroom with ensuite very modern bathroom, the dining room and lounge more than lived up to description and pictures. Breakfast included was very fine too! With a car, this very pleasent, quiet and spacious location is ideal and easy for getting into Swindon and exploring the many sights to see in Wiltshire and the Cotswolds. All in all, my wife and I unreservedly recommend it.

Such a BEAUTIFUL house! Loved staying with Richard and Karen, there literally was not enough that they could do for you. I would walk through the door and be offered some tea. The bedroom was an amazing size with a beautiful big en-suite for a bath or shower. All the little things were there; from a tray of tea and coffee to having a mat to putting my straighteners on, cooked breakfast and it was so fresh and yummy. Great start to my long day! Thank you so much for having me and I really hope to stay with you again!

What a wonderful stay. It was so nice walking in and saying “Wow, there’s no catch – it really is this stunning from the photos”. Richard and Karen are incredibly warm and inviting, and super helpful. The room was spacious, the bedding excellent and the bathroom is perfectly appointed. My girlfriend and I instantly felt like we made the best choice of the weekend. Breakfast was excellent and we had a continental spread that would rival any fine hotel. The Sunday paper awaited a quick read along with fruit, toast, charcuterie and a medley of cereals and yoghurt. If you are considering it, you would be crazy not to stay here.

My friend, partner and I stayed at Duchy Rag House for a local triathlon in the area. It was a wonderful stay and we were made to feel very welcome. The food was amazing and they were really accommodating for the wet and muddy aftermath of the tri! They recommended some lovely pubs and were just helpful all round. Would recommend wholeheartedly!

Our family stayed 4 nights during the Womad 2014 Festival. Richard & Karen were the best hosts. They made every possible effort to make our stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. The house was spotless. Breakfasts were amazing. Our bedroom was cosy & spacious, our bed was so comfortable we did not wake up even once during the night. We had a total feeling of privacy. Everything about our stay was perfect. We would definitely return. It was more than we ever expected. Highly recommended.
